Engagement bait is any post engineered for shallow reactions: "comment YES if you agree," "tag someone who needs this," "drop a 🔥 if you've been there." It works, until it doesn't.
Short-term, bait wins. Comments inflate, reach widens, the algorithm rewards the loop. Long-term, three things break. Platforms get better at detecting low-quality engagement and downrank the account. Buyers learn to scroll past bait the way they scroll past banner ads. And the brand voice drifts toward the lowest-common-denominator format, which makes everything else you post feel cheaper.
The replacement isn't "no CTAs." It's CTAs that match intent. A pillar post earns saves. A POV post earns thoughtful replies. A teardown post earns DMs. Every CTA should be the action a real reader would take if the post hit, not the action that maximizes the comment counter.
If you can't tell bait from genuine engagement in your own feed, sort by saves-to-likes ratio. Bait has high likes, low saves. Compounding content has the opposite shape.
